The symbol of the Archangel Michael is considered to be quite ancient. This is not some newly invented symbol, it is a symbol that has lasted for centuries. The people of Kyiv turned to this image in the distant XI-XII centuries, during the old days of Kyivan Rus. And then it was continued in the form of a coat of arms, starting from the 16th century.
The grandson of Yaroslav the Wise Svyatopolk bore the name Mikhail in his baptism. At the beginning of the 13th century, he laid a cathedral on the Old Kyiv Hill, which became one of the three shrines, included in the golden triangle of Kyiv, together with the Church of the Tithes and the St. Sophia Cathedral. This is the St. Michael's Golden Domed and monastery.
A little earlier, at the end of the 11th century, outside the main part of Kyiv, the Vydubitsky St. Mikhail's Monastery was founded. And the Vydubitsky monastery was one of the most famous shrines in Kyiv.
In the 14th century, the image of Archangel Mikhail decorated the coat of arms of the Polish Voivodeship of Kyiv. It is interesting that even after the expulsion of the Polish administration and the transition of Kyiv to the protectorate of the Russian kingdom, this coat of arms was preserved. Only over time, its colors and some of its individual details have changed. At the end of the 18th century this symbol was again approved as the coat of arms of Kyiv.
Therefore, Archangel Mikhail becomes a very important religious figure in Kyiv.
The placement of his image or sculptures on the city's buildings has always been treated with special respect. ⠀⠀
For example, walking near the opera house, you can often hear guides say that originally the roof of the theater was crowned with a sculpture of the Archangel Michael. But the church was categorically against, justifying its point of view by the fact that the theater is a sinful institution. The Archangel was removed, a golden lyre appeared in his place - a symbol of music.
The sculpture of the Archangel on Independence Square, for the fluttering cloak, was popularly nicknamed "Batman". It is located on the arch of the so-called Pechersk Gates. In Old Rus times, there were Lyadsky (southern) gate of the Kyiv fortress in that place. It was through these gate that Batu's troops broke into the city in the 13th century. During the time of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, the Kiev fortress and the gate were restored, but it was already called Pechersk, because it looked towards the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Later it was made stone baroque. There is now a baroque arch, designed to symbolically recall the times of Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Therefore, the sculpture of the Archangel Mikhail is executed in the Baroque style (and Batman is the hero of another fairy tale).
And if you find yourself at the monument to St. Vladimir, then pay attention to this feature of the image of St. Mikhail on the pedestal: the sword of the saint is lowered down, unlike most of his other images. This is how strict guardians of church traditions recommend depicting St. Mikhail when he is facing the sun. You cannot raise a sword on the Sun.
The building of the Arkada bank on Olginskaya street was built in 2003-2005 by the project of the architect Y. N. Borodkin. And it is also crowned by Archangel Mikhail. If we talk about sinfulness, then the bank Arkada, which occupies the building, is so famous for its real estate scams that it would be time to replace the Archangel with ... Who would you recommend?
